Episode Summary
The episode begins with Jaime Lannister being humiliated by his captors, who have cut off his right hand and mock him for his weakness. He tries to escape but is recaptured and beaten by Locke, the leader of the Bolton men. Brienne of Tarth, who is also a prisoner, tries to comfort him and urges him not to give up hope.
In King's Landing, Tyrion Lannister meets with Varys, the master of whisperers, who reveals his backstory and how he was castrated by a sorcerer when he was a young boy. He shows Tyrion a large wooden crate that contains the sorcerer who mutilated him, implying that he has been torturing him for years. He tells Tyrion that revenge is a dish best served cold and that he should be patient in his quest for justice against those who wronged him.
Arya Stark is taken to the hideout of the Brotherhood Without Banners, a group of outlaws who fight for the common people. She meets their leader, Beric Dondarrion, who tells her that they follow the Lord of Light, a mysterious god who grants them miracles. They also bring in Sandor Clegane, the Hound, who was captured by them earlier. Arya accuses him of killing her friend Mycah, a butcher's boy, back in season one. Beric agrees to put him on trial by combat and decides to fight him himself.
In Dragonstone, Stannis Baratheon visits his wife Selyse, whom he has neglected for a long time. He confesses to her that he has slept with Melisandre, the red priestess who serves the Lord of Light. Selyse surprises him by saying that she knows and approves of his affair, as she believes it is part of their god's plan. She also shows him their three stillborn sons, whom she has preserved in jars as a reminder of their failures.
Stannis then goes to see his daughter Shireen, who is locked away in a tower because she has greyscale, a disease that causes her skin to turn scaly and hard. She is happy to see him and asks him about Davos Seaworth, his loyal adviser whom he has imprisoned for treason after he tried to kill Melisandre. Stannis tells her that Davos is a traitor and leaves her alone. Shireen later sneaks out of her room and visits Davos in his cell. She brings him a book and offers to teach him how to read.
In Riverrun, Catelyn Stark mourns for her father Hoster Tully, who has died recently. She remembers how he taught her how to make a funeral boat when she was a child. She also blames herself for the misfortunes that have befallen her family, such as the death of her husband Ned Stark and the capture of her daughters Sansa and Arya. She wonders if it is all because she broke her promise to love Jon Snow, Ned's bastard son whom she always hated.
Meanwhile, Robb Stark attends his grandfather's funeral and watches as his uncle Edmure Tully tries to light the boat with a flaming arrow, but fails several times. His other uncle, Brynden Tully, also known as the Blackfish, takes over and succeeds in one shot. Robb scolds Edmure for disobeying his orders and attacking the Lannister forces at the Stone Mill, which cost them many men and ruined their strategy. He tells him that he had planned to lure Tywin Lannister, the head of the enemy house, into a trap, but Edmure's rash action allowed him to escape and save King's Landing from Stannis' attack.
In the North, Bran Stark has a dream in which he sees himself climbing a tower and being pushed by Jaime Lannister, as it happened in the first episode of the series. He also sees a three-eyed raven and hears a voice telling him to look for him beyond the Wall. He wakes up and tells his companions, Osha, Rickon, Hodor and Jojen and Meera Reed, about his dream. Jojen tells him that he is a warg, someone who can enter the minds of animals, and that he has the power to see the past, the present and the future. He says that Bran is the only one who can stop the White Walkers and that they must go north to find the three-eyed raven.
At Craster's Keep, a remote outpost beyond the Wall, the Night's Watch are resting after their escape from the White Walkers at the Fist of the First Men. They are unhappy with their situation and resent Craster, a wildling who marries his own daughters and sacrifices his sons to the White Walkers. Samwell Tarly sees Gilly, one of Craster's wives and daughters, giving birth to a baby boy. He fears for the child's fate and decides to help her escape.
Later, Craster catches some of the Night's Watch men stealing his food and a fight breaks out. Craster is killed by Karl Tanner, one of the mutineers. Lord Commander Jeor Mormont tries to restore order but he is also stabbed in the back by Rast, another traitor. Sam runs to Gilly and her baby and flees into the night.
In Astapor, Daenerys Targaryen finalizes her deal with Kraznys mo Nakloz, the slave master who sells her 8,000 Unsullied warriors, elite soldiers who are trained from birth to obey any command without question. She agrees to give him one of her dragons in exchange for all of his slaves. She also asks for Missandei, a young girl who serves as Kraznys' translator, as a token of goodwill. Kraznys agrees and gives Daenerys a whip that symbolizes her ownership of the Unsullied.
Daenerys tests her new army by ordering them to march forward and then halt. She then addresses them in Valyrian, revealing that she speaks their language and has understood everything that Kraznys has said about her. She tells them that they are free men now and that they can choose to follow her or leave. None of them leave.
She then turns to Kraznys and says "Dracarys", which means "dragonfire" in Valyrian. Her dragon Drogon breathes fire on Kraznys and burns him alive. Daenerys then orders her Unsullied to kill all the slave masters in Astapor and free all the slaves they find, but to harm no children or innocent people. She also frees Missandei from her service and asks her to join her as a friend.
As Astapor burns behind them, Daenerys leads her army out of the city. She drops the whip on the ground and walks among her followers, who hail her as "Mhysa", which means "mother" in Ghiscari. Her dragons fly above her as she smiles.
