What is the Bundesliga?

The Bundesliga (German for "Federal League") is the top tier of professional football in Germany. It consists of 18 teams that play each other twice in a season, once at home and once away, for a total of 34 matches per team. The season runs from August to May, with a winter break in December and January. The teams are ranked by points, with three points for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned as the champion.

How does the Bundesliga work?

The Bundesliga operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the second tier of German football, known as the 2. Bundesliga. The bottom two teams in the Bundesliga are automatically relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, while the top two teams in the 2. Bundesliga are promoted to the Bundesliga. The third-to-last team in the Bundesliga enters a playoff against the third-place team in the 2. Bundesliga, with the winner securing a spot in the next season's Bundesliga.

The top four teams in the Bundesliga qualify for the UEFA Champions League, Europe's elite club competition. The fifth-place team qualifies for the UEFA Europa League, Europe's second-tier club competition. The sixth-place team may also qualify for the UEFA Europa League, depending on the outcome of the DFB-Pokal, Germany's domestic cup competition. If the DFB-Pokal winner is already qualified for a European competition through their league position, then their spot goes to the sixth-place team in the Bundesliga. If not, then their spot goes to a playoff round between teams from different European leagues.

When and how was the Bundesliga founded?

The Bundesliga was officially founded in 1962, but its origins can be traced back to the early 20th century, when various regional leagues were formed in Germany. After World War II, Germany was divided into four zones of occupation by the Allied powers, and each zone had its own football league. In 1949, the German Football Association (DFB) was re-established and organized a national championship between the winners of the four zones. However, this system was not very efficient or profitable, as it involved long travel distances, uneven competition, and low attendance.

In 1962, the DFB decided to create a unified national league that would replace the regional leagues and improve the quality and popularity of German football. The DFB invited 46 clubs to apply for membership in the new league, and selected 16 based on various criteria, such as sporting performance, financial stability, stadium capacity, and fan support. The first season of the Bundesliga kicked off on August 24, 1963, with Werder Bremen hosting Borussia Dortmund in the opening match.
